Data and Surveillance
The Data and Surveillance arm of Birth Justice Philly focuses on collecting and analyzing detailed data on pregnancy-related morbidity and mortality.
At its core is the Philadelphia Maternal Mortality Review Committee, aligned with national standards for methodology. This committee formulates prevention strategies based on thorough case reviews, providing evidence-based recommendations specific to Philadelphia's healthcare context. Additionally, this arm has developed the nation's first Severe Maternal Morbidity (SMM) surveillance program, which will track unexpected outcomes of labor and delivery that result in significant short- and long-term health consequences.
This program plays a critical role in identifying and understanding SMM trends within Philadelphia's hospitals, using hospital-level clinical data for in-depth analysis. It is a proactive system for identifying SMM cases, offering valuable insights for public health improvements and pinpointing opportunities for targeted interventions.
